eReaders make the news!

The CBC news video focuses on two things— borrowing ebooks from a library, for which a Kindle doesn't work (Amazon sells books, remember) and the Kindle DX on college campuses.

I remember one of the libraries in NJ tested out using Kindle when it first came out. They were using the shared account that Amazon allowed and so bought one book for 5 Kindle devices that they rented.

I wish I could remember which library that was.

I have heard of libraries loaning Kindles! It's an expensive option, though.

I'm not sure how "expensive" it really is in the long run.

A bestseller that Amazon is forcing for under $9.99 as compared to the $24.95 bestseller that just came out. If it was 5 linked Kindles, you pay $9.99 for that book instead of 5 hardcovers of $124.95. Meaning they break even in a year if they only do this little over 1 book a month. That works out to a major cost savings for a library.

And I would imagine that it would be easy for a Library to approach one of the technology grants for this.

It's true in the long run, but in the short term, you have to be able to invest in enough Kindles to make it feasible. I would hope they would offer them first to folks who need large print or text-to-speech. I know an 89 year old lady who loves her Kindle 2.

You know I didn't even think of that aspect. That would be a major cost savings instead of stocking a section of Large Print Books that don't have a high circulation number.

Just wait until you get a few decades older and large print will come to mind a lot sooner. -)
