Ahhh! I'm back online! I spent a three day weekend at the beach in Delaware (Rehoboth/Dewey area) for a family gathering. My husband's first cousin, once removed graduated from medical school with a degree in osteopathic medicine and she is getting commissioned as a captain in the US Army at the same time. Her folks gave a party for her and her friends and relatives showed up to celebrate her accomplishment.

We had a great time, but we stayed in a beach motel. It was clean and offered some amenities (fridge and microwave) but the wifi was pathetic. I can check email on my phone but typing anything more than a few words on that tiny keyboard is just not fun. The cable TV included HBO, which was nice but with FiOS at home, we are now used to a plethora of channels and a button that says "info" on the remote, so we can find out what's on. No such luck.

Fortunately, I had my Kindle with me, so I started reading Fur-Face, by jongibbs. So far it's charming, and very English. Plus it has a talking cat! Who could ask for more? (Click here to buy a Kindle copy.)

You may be wondering where the first name thing mentioned in the subject line comes in. That's Hilda, which is what I call the GPS app in my phone. I named her after Hilda Rumpole in the Rumpole of the Bailey books and PBS shows because Rumpole calls her "She Who Must Be Obeyed." My Hilda talks with a female voice and tells me what to do, but I actually do disobey her frequently. For one thing, the Dewey Beach/Rehoboth Beach area seems to have renumbered a lot of properties to make it easier for 911 operators, and Hilda very nearly sent me 4 miles past our motel. Fortunately, I saw the sign and was able to pull into the parking lot without having to turn around. That's the first time she has steered me that wrong, although she does give false messages on I270 where it splits. If you're going toward the Maryland/DC side of the Beltway she keeps saying, "Prepare to keep left in .3 miles. Prepare to keep left. Keep left. Keep right!"

When people talk about Google making us stupid, I think about Hilda. I don't think she makes me stupid, but she does make mer braver about going places I have never been. We set out for a place that was 140 miles away without a map in the car because we had Hilda to tell us how to get there. It turned out we had in fact, give Hilda bad info, which illustrates the limits of computer technology. Garbage in means garbage out. And of course, Hilda requires a power source. Fortunately, we had the car charger in the car because I forgot to bring the wall charger for the phone. There's another limit of technology!

Anyway, we're home and the pets are glad to see us. Sigh. Tomorrow it's back to work!

I LOVE that area of Delaware. My favorite place in the whole world is Fenwick Island. It makes me happy just driving through there. We vacationed in Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach every summer for about ten years. It was EMPTY when we first started going. Once it got so crowded and expensive, we stopped going. Can you believe we used to rent a house in Rehoboth (not on the beach) for $400 per week? On the beach in Bethany for $1200? Now you can't touch a place on the beach block for less than $4500 per week. Crazy.

Welcome home! Yay, for Hilda! Our GPS always wants to take us sightseeing in the strangest places. Adventure, Ho!
