A new paradigm?

This item was of interest a while ago on GalleyCat. If you read it, you'll notice that by publishing only as an e-book, the author was able to do away with needing a traditional publisher. Of course, it helps to already have a name like Gabriel Garcia Marquezs. Not quite the same impact if your name is Joe Blow.

I'm open to ebook only publishers. One publisher (mostly known as ebook) wants electronic and print rights forever! That seems a bit on the extravagant side for a publisher who doesn't give an advance. I had to turn down submitting a full because I just didn't think giving up print rights was worth it.

Maybe I was stupid and should have acquiesced. I'd like a limit on rights whether e- or print. Three years seems totally sufficient, don't you think?

Oh, yeah. I will never take the pen name of Joe Anybody, so that's out of the question.

Well, of course! For some of us, it would have to be Jo Blow. -)

But the fact that a big name author appreciated the better deal the ebook company gave him says something about the current publishing model.
