Hello, Columbus!

I am leaving for Columbus, OH, USA this afternoon, to go to the World Fantasy Convention. I will try to post daily updates from the con, but before I get into full con mode, I will say that if you have not looked at the video of the new Color Nook, you should. It's a excellent illustration of the way digital publishing is branching out. Barnes & Noble plans to keep making its e-ink (black-and-white) version but also to offer this color, larger screen version that is all LCD and full color, to take advantage of color and the ability to run apps for children's books and magazine.

Ebooks are not Highlander. There can be more than one platform, more than one solution.

Doesn't sound like they've differentiated themselves from the iPad enough. It's still bound by the limitation of the display not being able to be read in sunlight, but now with a more limited battery life.

It is powered by Android, though, which means that the OS will be customizable going forward.

Well, the price is half the minimum of the iPad, so maybe that's enough. They do look like they will have some kind of apps. I wonder if this is what was making Steve Jobs so snippy about 7" screens being worthless?

Oh, and have a good time up the road!

Maybe next year! It's in San Diego & Neil Gauman is GoH but I will miss it because my son is getting married the week before. sigh.

I got an email about the colour nook from B&N this morning. I must say it looks good :)

I though it was pretty damn clever of B&N to keep e-ink but offer color LCD for those who want it. Some geeky types are underwhelmed but we will see.

Wooohooo! See you there!

We are here now! I will message you my room number and cell phone number.

Woohoo! I wish I had a separate file in my cell phone for all my WFC hook ups. I know, I know...I probably do! But beats me how that works.

Hey, is there free wifi in the lounge or lobby? Or is it all pay as you go?
Oct. 28th, 2010 12:24 am (UTC)
Just make an entry called WFC Karen N!

I'm not sure. The hotel has you sign up for a day pass with T-Mobile Hot Spot but charge it to your room. they say they will take it off the bill when we check out. But if it's the same wifi, it should not cost extra!

I hate when you have to pay for wifi. It doesn't really cost them anything! Certainly not $12 per day. grumblegrumblegrumble...
