A Pogo moment

"What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet" — Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare

In the old Pogo strip by Walt Kelly, there was one panel where Pogo said, "We have met the enemy, and he is us," or words to that effect.

I felt just a bit like that when I read the Michael Chabon's next book is coming out from Del Rey Books. Michael Chabon? Del Rey Books?

The story doesn't sound very spec fic-ish. Here's part of the blurb on the Del Rey site: "... a moody, itinerant physician fond of jaunty headgear, and [an] ex-soldier ... as quick with a razor-tongued witticism as he is with a sharpened battle-ax. Brothers under the skin, comrades in arms, they make their rootless way through the Caucasus Mountains, circa A.D. 950..."

Sounds more like Ivanhoe meets the Rush Hour franchise, except Ivanhoe wasn't far enough back in time for this setting. Actually, Chabon's earlier book The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay sounded like it had more spec fic in it, what with the golem references, but I confess I never read it. Maybe I should?

It just goes to show you that genre is nothing but a marketing label. But still, if Del Rey can hook Michael Chabon, maybe Tor should make a play for Anne Tyler? -)
