True Confessions

I read the Kid's Post. That's a page in the Washington Post where the news is explained in a way kids can understand and interesting things are featured. Yes, I get my news from the kid's page, but I also find out things that I would never have known otherwise.

This morning's Kid's Post had an item on R.L. Stine, author of the Goosebumps series of scary stories for kids. My kids read them when they were younger. What was most interesting to me was that R.L. Stine became a spec fic writer partly because he read Ray Bradbury when he was young. The Kid's Post even had a review of the Martian Chronicles, a favorite of mine, suggesting it as reading material for kids 12 and up, and another brief item about a spec fic series for teens by Margaret Peterson Haddix. The Kid's Post refers to Ray Bradbury as a sci-fi guy (I guess they couldn't pass up the rhyme), but I consider most of his books fantasy, albeit not traditional fantasy.

So, today's Kid's Post is basically all about spec fic for young people, and I am all about that.

What I want to be when I grow up

What I want to be when I grow up? I want to be this guy. His name is Matt Harding and he can't dance! Or rather he can't dance well. And yet he does dance, the world over, with verve and joy and incredible energy. Can't ask for a lot more out of life than that.

If you don't believe me, see for yourself!
