I'm not entirely sure how this is supposed to work, but here is the picture david_bridger posted on his blog based on what he knows about me.

I can't tell which Jane Austen heroine she is! She could be Emma, or perhaps she's Elinor, the sensible sister from Sense and Sensibility. I truly am an Austen fan, so I'll take the spiritual kinship as being spot on, and ignore any minor differences in our physical appearances. -)

It's Keira Knightley playing Elizabeth Bennet. :)

Ooh! My absolute favorite Austen heroine! I haven't see that version, just the PBS one. I'm sure my son would have known her in a heartbeat, but I've only seen Keira Knightley as a blond.

So is the Knightley version any good?

I haven't seen it either, although I imagined you would have. The only Austen film adaptation I know well is Emma Thompson's superb screenplay of Sense and Sensibility. (I confess I'm more a Thompson fan than an Austen fan, and I know I shouldn't say such things on your blog.)

I think Emma Thompson is great! I loved her Elinor. The weird thing about watching the Austen adaptations they are running now on PBS (America's version of the BBC) now, is that the actress who plays Elinor seems almost to be channeling Emma Thompson! It was eerie! I liked the Emma Thompson version better, though. The new version made some real departures from the story line as far as Marianne and Willoughby that I did not like.

I adore Emma Thompson. I don't do fanboy normally, but for her I make an exception.

A writer friend of mine who lives in Chicago loves everything Austen and nagged me for years to read her, or at least watch some movies of her books. Finally, one day last year, when I mentioned Thompson S&S was on British telly that evening, my friend rang me as it started to say she was playing her DVD of the film and that we would watch it together on the phone. Her insights helped me appreciate the story far better than I would have done otherwise.

"...my friend rang me as it started to say she was playing her DVD of the film and that we would watch it together on the phone. "

What a cool idea!
