Coincidence?

This week's book reviews on Sci Fi Weekly has two reviews of books where the plotline centers on colonizing Mars. Mars Life is by Ben Bova, and Marsbound is by Joe Haldeman.

They sound like very different books, but they both have Mars in the title, and I find it interesting that two well established, well known writers would both come out with a Mars book so close together. Ever since the Kim Stanley Robinson books came out, I don't recall much in the way of Mars books.

Or am I just misremembering?

It's a matter of hoppin' on the band wagon. Catching that craze before that ship has sailed. Mars is in the news, therefore exciting to the authors and the publishers see a platform and dollar signs. I'm surprised there aren't MORE Mars books right now. I'm reviewing Bova's at Mostly Fiction in a couple weeks. Possible interview on my blog as well (the other blog - http://sciencefictionmusings.blogspot.com, aka Science Fiction and Other ODDysseys).

Maybe there will be more books, what with Mars being so in the news? But the moon is also in the news, so maybe lunar base stories will also surge? I tried Wikipedia but didn't find an entry for the moon in fiction.
