More Scalzi smarts

Sometimes it pays to be a geek, but it's not always required. Author John Scalzi is known for making good use of technology in general, and the web in particular. And even though he's a proponent of alternative media, he hasn't forgotten the market for hard-copy books. A GalleyCat post describes his latest marketing idea for the holidays, a mix of old and new technology. He used his blog to invite his fans to call his local bookstore in Troy, Ohio to order his books. When they do, he goes to the bookstore to sign and personalize the books before they're shipped out!

Simple but clever. It benefits the local (independent) bookstore—they sell more books. It benefits John Scalzi—he gets more royalties. And it benefits Scalzi's readers—they get autographed copies of the books they want. It's a win-win-win situation.
